Laird Hamilton – The greatest Big Wave Surfer Ever -The King of Extreme Sports
Since ancient time, surfers have challenged to ride the biggest wave, but there was a limit to paddling into the fast moving wave with a board as the surf got larger. The paddle-in to catch maximum wave stops about 30 feet. Laird and his friends got the idea of getting towed behind Jet-Ski to catch these monster waves. Paddling into a large wave requires a long-board for the speed and to glide into the large face of the wave. But Laird figured out, once you are on this monster wave, there was no need for the extra length and weight of the board, so they started chopping down to experiment with the board and now these monster waves are being ridden on a mere 5 foot board. It’s truly amazing to watch them surf these monster waves exceeding 50 foot face. Laird Hamilton is also the pioneer of tow-in surfing. Laird Hamilton is not only a great sportsman, but he is an innovator and a genius craftsman. It could be argued that no one has changed the face of a sport more in the last twenty years than Laird Hamilton has for surfing. But he is just amazing in the water. He has been instrumental in pushing stand-up paddling, foilboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and long distance paddling, Laird was the first surfer to conquered Tahiti’s Teahupo’o! . This place is considered to be the most challenging dangerous surfing spot with fast moving ground swell pitching over extremely shallow reef, and his death-defying drop into the big wave caught the world’s attention back in 2000. This solidified his reputation as the greatest big wave surfer of all time. A wipe-out in Teahupo’o, a particularly hazardous shallow-water reefbreak in southeast Tahiti, means almost certain death. Laird has been a major ambassador of his sport, spreading his love and respect for surfing around the world.
