Outdoor Life Feeding Times

Would it be unfair to move me cat cross country?
I live in California and we might move to Florida. I have this cat who is an indoor outdoor cat. She sleeps with me and I feed her and shes basically in the house a lot. But she can go outside whenever she wants. A few times I have seen her almost a mile away from home, so she knows the area. She is my cat and also my very first pet. But she has lived in the same house for her whole life. Would it be fair to take her with me? I really do not want to leave her behind, but I also don’t want her to be unhappy. I also heard she might run away if I take her with me. We will be renting our house out if we move, so we will tell the renters the must feed her. What should I do?
Ah you guys are making me feel bad. I love her more then anything, which is weird. I really do not want to leave her behind. I would hate that. I cry just thinking about it. But if she would be unhappy, I don’t want to take her. I don’t want to be selfish.
She’ll be happiest going with you. She can get to know a new area, but you are her family. And you can’t guarantee that the renters will take care of her. They could easily tell you that she ran away when they really brought her to a shelter. They could tell you that they’re feeding her when they’re not. How would you enforce that stipulation from across a continent?
To keep her from getting lost/running away in Florida, you need to keep her completely inside for at least 3 weeks. The longer the better. You should introduce her to the new area slowly, under supervision–i.e. on a leash and harness. I would say not to let her out on her own in the new area for several months. That will also allow you the time to determine whether the area is even safe for her to be let outside at all.
When people tell you that cats run away from a new home, it’s because they were stupid and let the cat out immediately. Don’t do that.
Take your cat with you.
Edit: If you don’t want her to be unhappy, then take her with you. She will be devastated if you leave her behind. Keeping her inside for a while might frustrate her, but it won’t make her unhappy. YOU make her happy, not the privilege of going outside.
