Any adventurous ideas for a 3 wk itinerary in Australia?

I want the real Australian experience. I am into OUTDOOR ECO-ADVENTURES/WILDLIFE/CULTURE/SIGHTSEEING/URBAN GEMS. I’m going with my other half with plans to travel anytime from March to May.

Looking to visit (not booked and still contemplating where to go):

Cairns or Brisbane (possibly)
Sydney
Melbourne (must, in order to check out school)
Adelaide (possibly)
Hobart or Launceston

*Open to other destinations. Suggestions?

I was looking into tours, but if taking the hike independently without the a tour guide is more inexpensive, I would’ve love to go in that route anyways. Just don’t know the best direction of going about it.

I looked into Tiger Airways, which has online deals for $25 to connect to most cities. But others, perhaps, I can take the train or bus.

Also, which is the best zoo to in Australia to see? Australia Zoo is where? Melbourne?

All the above answers have valid points, I’d also like to add my own in.

Tasmania, Launceston and Hobart, have some of the world’s best walking tracks. Culturally Sydney and Melbourne offer (arguably) the best destinations. Frankly there is something on offer for everyone in Australia, from the Tasmanian bush walking, to a night at the opera in Sydney, to sailing the Whitsundays to swimming with dolphins in monkey Mia (Western Australia), to shopping till you drop in Melbourne.

The best zoo I feel is Great Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

I’ve also provided links to a couple of Ecotourism websites based here in Australia:
