Coyote Hunting?
I’ve been a deer and rabbit hunter for most of my slightly young life. I was reading in Outdoor Life a bit about predator calling and hunting, and would love to give it a try. I live in Michigan, but I hunt mostly in Southern Indiana. Anybody out there with some experience have solid advice on how to get started and where/how to hunt? In my experience, shared knowledge is the best way to learn how to hunt, rather than trying to “do it by the books.”
Thanks guys.
Please, please don’t quote an article to me…I read them too.
I’ve called coyotes since 1973 and the magazine articles are pretty correct. If you can, find a high spot that over looks where you will be calling, I like creek bottoms with draws where they will bed and a food source for them. Since you’ve been reading, you know about wind direction, camo and all. I have several hand calls and 2 high price electronic units. I like the hand calls better as I control the squeals but they do freeze up in cold weather so have 3-4. That is where the electric unit is nice. One thing I do that you don’t read much on is in late Jan. and early Feb. the mating season, you will have 3-4 respond. I shoot the closest one to me where the others see it fall, then get on the “hurt dog” call, like a dog yelping when kicked or hurt. The others will turn and run but often return to see what is going on with the hurt call. Also, if you do not get a shot as you spooked one, as it is leaving, just bark like a dog. I have had several stop and look back giving you a shot. Sorry but to many things to add and not enough room here. A really good web site I recently found is varmintals.net (I think) as I am not home now. It has recorded sounds you can listen to, tons of info on calling. Go out at night, use a locator call, howl and if they answer as they will within 5 minutes, you know where to go. If no answer, drive up the road a mile or so and try again.

I would like to know as to what years Tonia Schmidt went to Valley High in Sandy, Ut.?
Valley High is part of the Jordan School District. I know Tonia Schmidt was in the play, the Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds in 1986. I never say the play, but I read an article about it in a news archive in the Deseret News for November, 30 1986. the new administration told me she graduated in 1987, but no more information avaliable about her and she isn’t in any yearbook. I went to Valley High from 86-87. I would love any kind of information about her whole life and any poetry she has published. In my yearbook, she is not pictured in the student class photos, but on page 40 an outdoor photo of her is there. Page 40 is all about her and she has some poetry published there. I don’t recall seeing her at school. Maybe we knew or saw each other, but I can’t seem to remember anyone looking like the photo of her on this page.
Ask Tonia Schmidt.
