Tow In Surfing

Any recomendations for a small sailboat you can put in the back of a medium pickup truck?
Looking for something I can sail with no more than 4 people. 90% of the time solo. Mostly bay sailing, but like to have the option for playing in the surf on good days. The water is my bay is relatively shallow for most of it..averaging 2-5′.
I’m a fan of catamaran’s, but I’m open to suggestions. Needs to be easily setup by just one person for when I go alone(mast stepping solo has been a problem in the past).
If it’s an absolute necessity, I can get a trailer. But I want to avoid it if at all possible. I don’t like towing anything.
Thanks.
I forgot to mention I’ve helped set up a Hobie 16 before and I cannot set that up alone..so something smaller or easier to setup is a must.
A laser or a sunfish are the classic examples of small boats that can probably fit in the back of a pickup truck and are meant to be sailed by one person, but both are able to handle probably 3 depending on the size of the people. The only problem with them is they probably draw 4 feet of water with their dagger board down. So if you only have 2-5 feet that is not much clearance for it.
A suggestion for a catamaran you could look at the Hobie Wave. It’s like13ft and you could sail it along or with a group of people. The thing is I am not sure if i will fit in the back of your pickup truck because of the width. But it is a nice boat to cruise around on and take a couple people out on.

XCEL Surf Boots Reviews – 2010
Hi Again,
Well the winter season is upon us and all the winter gear is hitting the shops. Sid’s Surf Shack is no different and would like to take a look at the various boots that are about and give reviews on what they are like and how they will benefit you in the water.
XCEL 5mm Infiniti Drylock Bamboo Boots
XCEL 5mm Infiniti Tek Bamboo Lined Boots
XCEL 7mm Infiniti Tek Boots Round Toe
All of XCEL’s boots are seriously high quality products and will all do the job depending on what your after.
XCEL 5mm Infiniti Drylock Bamboo Boots
This season’s Infiniti Drylock Boots are just as good as last, even better. However, within the design this season, XCEL have incorporated Bamboo Recycled products to make sure they are as eco friendly to the environment as possible. The Bamboo lined boots track pockets of air which in turn create better insulation to you feet letting you stay out that extra bit longer. As with all XCEL’s Surf Boots, they run a decent way up the leg making for a good overlap with your wetsuit and with the Drylock cuff technology at the top of the boot, its a miracle if any water finds its way in! A great winter boot by our reckoning.
XCEL 5mm Infiniti Tek Boots
The Infiniti Tek boots have been styled differently this season with new colours, but again, this is the only visual difference, with the same high quality boot as last year but also with the bamboo lining, with XCEL not compromising on quality or style. They realise the importance of warmth. The only major difference here from the Infinti Drylock Boots is that they straight seal at the top rather that the drylock cuff. A great boot that we have been wearing for years.
XCEL 7mm Infinti Tek Round Toe Boot
If 5mm just isn’t good enough for you then try the 7mm. You can just about use these 7mm Inifniti Tek boots anywhere giving you the maximum protection from the elements. Like the Infiniti Tek and Drylock’s, they are Bamboo Lined for ultra warmth, but with that extra 2mm, you should have no problems on a long session. An arch strap (As with all XCEL’s boots) makes them easy to get off on those freezing days and they also run high up the leg creating a good overlap with your Wetsuit.
No matter what your looking for this winter, the XCEL’s range will do exactly what you want, and more. Just take your time to choose which is best for you and you wont be dissapointed.

Big Wave Surfing

Can you surf big, medium, or only white wash waves with a Bic funboard?
i have a Bic funboard and i dont know if it can only surf small waves and white washes. i’ve only been surfing for a month and it doesnt seem like it can surf big waves…help
If you are good enough, you could surf big waves on a slab of plywood. Bic funboards are really only good for beginners and rental boards, like all popouts. However, if you have the skill level, you can put it to use on almost any wave, except for the exceptionally big. Bic team riders push that plastic junk around in all sorts of conditions, and do amazing things with it.
As far as what you can (or can’t) do after a month, might leads me to think that a lesson or two (from a friend who surfs, or an instructor) might help you out. In the mean time, just get as much time in the water as you can. Keep on practicing on the Bic popout, and save your money over the winter and buy a nice real surfboard for next summer.
I have been surfing since 1966, and I understand that Bic funboards are cool for beginners (my son-in-law started on one), however as you improve, if you are really into surfing, you owe yourself a nice board. Good luck!
